Local AI

Local AI means that a language or text model runs where the data is created — on a device on site or on a server in Germany. The content someone enters into the model does not leave this place. This distinguishes local AI from offerings where texts are sent to servers in other countries.

What does this mean?

Anyone who works with local AI keeps control over their inputs. The person decides which data the model sees at all. An installation in a municipality can be set up so that only its own staff have access.

What is already possible today?

Smaller text models can run on an ordinary office computer. Longer documents or multilingual queries require additional hardware on site. Language quality depends on the model and on memory, not on where the model runs.

What is still open?

Which models can be operated economically in a municipality over the long term is currently being tested. Which tasks AI is allowed to take on is decided by the municipality itself. Whether a model is suitable for a specific task must be checked on a case-by-case basis.
